Uruguay finished at the summit of Group A after beating host Russia 3-0 in Samara on Monday.
A Luis Suarez free-kick and a Denis Cheryshev own goal saw Uruguay race into a strong lead. The match was then practically over when Igor Smolnikov was shown a second yellow card just 36 minutes in.
Edinson Cavani wrapped up the affair with a jab from close range after 90 minutes.
Oscar Tabarez’s outfit took a full complement of points from its three group-stage games, setting up a meeting with the second-placed team from Group B. Russia’s round-of-16 opponent will be the team that finishes top of that quartet. Spain, Portugal, and Iran will determine who finishes first and second in Group B when they play later on Monday.
More to come.
